Nursing Moms Protest Target Policy

By KSEE News Dec 30, 2011 Updated Dec 29, 2011 during 7:55 PM PST Nursing moms dissapoint with breastfeeding preferences during Target stores staged a "nurse-in" Wednesday during locations in Chicago as well as across a country. Local moms say a demonstration is meant to raise awareness about controversies over nursing in public. This latest outcry, they say, stems from a recent incident in Texas. Digital Daily subscribe to our daily newsletter Michelle Hickman, a Houston mother of four, apparently was nursing in a remote area of a Target store when staffers told her to move in to a wise room. There were so many employees confronting her, she said, which it was time to speak up. "Basically I got harassed by a total handful of women Target employees," she said. Hickman complained to a corporate headquarters, as well as Target sided with her. Representatives said it has always been a store's process to have women feel comfortable when breastfeeding. "We kind of just refreshed our team members on our process to have sure which any guests which come in to a store aren't uncomfortable during all," said Chicago Target spokeswoman Ashley Krehoff. So far more than 5,800 people assimilated a inhabitant Facebook group in support of a movement, as well as Hickman says about 150 stores in a U.S. participated in Wednesday's pacific protest. In Chicago, about a dozen moms met during a Target during 2656 N. Elston as well as began breastfeeding during 10:00 a.m. inside a Target Starbucks, with support from a store. "If you've you ever heard a baby cry when their hungry, it's unequivocally unpleasant," said Cora Shaw, a Chicago mom. "And it's unequivocally unfair to them. He knows I've got food all a time as well as he wants it, so to hear him screaming as well as wanting food as well as me not giving it to him, he doesn't understand that."
