Nursing group angry over Ophelia Ford's fiery comments

MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) - One Mid-South nursing organization is firing back after recent, incendiary comments done by Tennessee state Sen. Ophelia Ford. During the committee hearing in Nashville Tuesday, Ford referred to "mean, hateful nurses." "I cannot tell you the horrific knowledge that I had as well as it was nurses who were mainly you do these things to me," Ford said. Her comments prompted the reply from the Mid-South Nursing Institute, the nonprofit supporting nurses as well as work related issues. "I am disappointed in Sen. Ford's statements," said Robert Coch, the group's executive director. "For 11 years nurses were judged to be the most honest, reliable profession according to the Gallup poll." The group hopes the state senator's explosive comments didn't take divided from the issue of providing some-more protection for nurses as well as other health care professionals. "Protecting health care workers from attack is the real issue because it is the health care issue, kind of an epidemic that we've got going on in our own profession," Coch said. In fact, Ford's comments came during the proposal to increase penalties for assaults on healthcare workers. Ford argued patients are the ones who need protection from nurses. Copyright 2012 WMC-TV.
